Captors, Prisoners, and Stockholm Syndrome

Unhinge the UniverseAs many have probably gathered by reading the blurb, Unhinge the Universe focuses on a relationship forming between a wartime captor and his captive. To say we were venturing into a minefield when we wrote this would be an understatement. After all, when one person is being held against his will, the potential for rape and ultimately Stockholm Syndrome is very high.

Aleks and I, of course, didn’t want any of that. We approached this story very carefully, mindful first and foremost that while Hagen was a prisoner, he only engages in sexual contact of his own free will. In fact, we were surprised at how much he could be the aggressor, catching John off guard and throwing him off his game.

While Hagen is John’s prisoner, the power play between them is anything but one-sided. Hagen has information John needs. John also has information that Hagen needs, as well as a great deal of power over Hagen’s circumstances as a prisoner. What power Hagen possesses, he doesn’t relinquish. In fact, when things become sexual between him and John, Hagen finds himself with more power than he initially thought. There is a scene very early in the story that inches into the ballpark of dubious consent at first—it’s more of a mind game than anything—but it quickly backfires on John in a way he didn’t see coming.

The power balance between them shifts after that, but the relationship dynamic does as well. A connection begins forming, and both men start seeing each other as men rather than enemies. It’s difficult to elaborate much without revealing spoilers, but rest assured that as the relationship evolves, so does the power balance.

So yes, a captor and captive story certainly has the potential to creep into rape and Stockholm Syndrome, and even if those things are avoided, a story like this absolutely won’t be sunshine and roses all the way through. But in the case of Unhinge the Universe – and another POW story we’re currently writing – Aleks and I were conscientious of the power dynamic between our characters, and how that could blow up in our faces if we didn’t handle it carefully.

I believe we did, and I hope our readers will agree.

Horizons-Book One in the Horizons Series

HorizonsTwenty-three-year-old Clark Stevens, a popular wide receiver with a potential NFL contract, has a few problems. He’s got a jealous girlfriend, a narrow-minded and controlling father, an attention problem, and an unexpected and powerful attraction to the trauma doctor—the male trauma doctor—who treats him for a broken bone.

Dr. Jody Williams is getting some really mixed signals. He can’t ignore how much he wants Clark, because it’s obvious Clark feels the same way. For the out and proud doctor, the solution seems very simple. For Clark, it’s not! His world is not gay-friendly, and the obstacles he’s faced have led him to deny his sexuality for years.

It’s the Super Bowl of disasters, no matter how you look at it. In the end, Clark has to decide if he’s going to stick with the only life he’s ever known or take a chance on a new one with Jody.

Horizons-Excerpt

I SPED up I-80, heading out to Folsom. I’d been in a miserable mood since I left Jody last night.

We’d sat for an hour, attempting to read through a few chapters, but the dynamic between us had changed after the close body contact. We were like two prizefighters, tiptoeing around each other, afraid to meet in the center of the ring for fear of the explosion that would occur. He must have been able to tell I was at my breaking point, as I clenched and unclenched my jaw the entire time we were reading. I couldn’t bear to look at him, and when his hand accidentally brushed mine, we both jumped in shock.

It was torture in the most erotic, mind-bending way. I would have probably disgraced myself if he touched me again, and so I just stood up, kicked back the chair, and told him I had to go. He sat there and nodded, looking the other way. I knew he was as affected as I was because his hands were trembling when he held the book and his eyes were shimmering.

I pulled into my parents’ driveway, completely unaware of the distance I’d traveled. The house seemed unoccupied, and I yelled out for Mom, getting no response.

Hunger seized me suddenly. I couldn’t remember when I’d last eaten, so I pulled open the refrigerator door and grabbed the essentials of a sandwich—the cold cuts, the mayo and mustard—and a bottle of Corona, balancing everything like a circus juggler. By the time I’d polished off my lunch, the troops were starting to arrive.

“Dude, when’d you get in?” Zach grunted out, looking like he’d been through a war.

“What’s with you?”

“I’ve been out helping Robby lay carpet in the baby’s room.”

“Talk about last minute.”

“I know.”

“Did you get it done?”

“It’s all good. Are you staying the night?”

“May as well.”

“Is Nikki with you?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“We’re not joined at the hip, you know.”

“You’re lucky to have her, dude. She’s hot as fuck!”

“We’re just friends.”

“What a dumbass!”

“Don’t call me that!” I spat out, just itching for a fight. I hoped he’d say it again, because I was in the mood to break something, and his face was as good as anything.

“What the hell is going on?” My dad had just walked through the door and caught my end of the conversation.

“Tell Zach to mind his own business.”

“Why are you in such a foul mood?”

“I’m just tired of people telling me what I should and shouldn’t do.”

“Like who?”

“Like never mind!”

I stood up and walked out of the room, making my way down the hall toward my bedroom. I threw myself on the bed and put my right arm over my eyes, willing myself to calm down. I knew I’d overreacted to Zach’s few questions. I knew why I was in such a state, and it had nothing to do with anyone in this house.

After a few minutes, I heard a light knock on the door, and my mom popped her head in. “Can I come in?”

“Sure.” Why the fuck not.

She sat on the edge of the bed and rubbed her hand up and down my leg. “What’s bothering you?”

“It’s nothing, Mom.”

“Don’t tell me it’s nothing. You’re in one of your moods again, and I really don’t want any problems this weekend.”

“Then tell Zach to leave me alone. Tell everyone to leave me alone and get out of my business. You included.”

“What the hell have I done?”

“Nothing! Just go, Mom. I’m sorry.”

“Sweetie, is it Nikki? Have you two had a fight?”

“Oh, please, give me a break.”

“What then?”

“Nothing. Just go!”

“Fine!” She stood and walked out the door, slamming it in a childish fit of temper.

It’s funny that she would accuse me of having a “mood.” Everyone around here was into door slamming and yelling. We were not the most peaceful household in the world, and I suppose with five sons, any gentleness in my mother was soon replaced by the need to be as tough as nails so that her boys wouldn’t ride roughshod over her. The only time she showed her gentle side was when we got sick or hurt. The rest of the time she was all business, which brought my thoughts back to something I’d questioned many times before.

Why did I have these feelings for other men? It’s not like my mother dressed me in pink or played with tea sets around me. I was handled in exactly the same manner as my other brothers, except for the special attention to my schoolwork. Maybe it had something to do with the ADD? Was that same gene the one that made me think about guys the way my brothers thought about women?

I wondered what Jody would think of my family. He already disliked my father for the mishandling of my attention deficit. I couldn’t imagine what it was like to grow up in a family as accepting as Jody’s. For a father to actively educate a gay son about safe sex was mind-boggling. Neither one of my parents had given us any sex education. They just assumed we knew what we were doing. The only time I heard anything about sex was when Magic Johnson resigned due to his HIV status and my father sat in front of our TV set and called him a fucking queer. He then turned to us and said, “See, this is what happens when you stick your dick in the wrong places.” The fact that Johnson contracted HIV from a female meant nothing to my dad. He heard HIV, and he assumed Magic was queer.

I was around ten or eleven at the time, already harboring a few man fantasies, and as soon as I heard that I shoved them so far back in the closet they were buried for years. All my efforts to be “normal” in that area of my life were successful due to the countless number of females who threw themselves at me. Every time I’d start thinking of a male body, I’d actively seek out a female or watch a girly video or read Playboy; anything to keep the visions of men out of my brain.

This brought me to the real reason why I was so angry I was vibrating in place. All my efforts to be like all the other men in my family were useless, because I wasn’t like them. I was a twenty-two-year-old jock on the brink of an NFL career, daydreaming about kissing Jody on the mouth. In truth, I wanted way more. What would he taste like? Would he let me run my hands over his chest and down his abs, and finally grip that hard-on that had pressed up against me on at least two occasions. I imagined sinking down on my knees in front of him, sliding the zipper down his khakis, and freeing his cock. I was certain it would be as perfect as the rest of him. Could I handle him without gagging? Did spunk taste sweet or salty? What about swallowing? Oh God…. I was so fucking hard I had to get off. I flipped over and pressed my monster cock against the mattress, knowing this would never happen because I was too chickenshit to do anything about it.

About Mickie B Ashling

Mickie B. Ashling is the alter-ego of a multifaceted woman raised by a single mother who preferred reading over other forms of entertainment. She found a kindred spirit in her oldest child and encouraged her with a steady supply of dog-eared paperbacks. Romance was the preferred genre, and historical romances topped her favorites list.

By the time Mickie discovered her own talent for writing, real life had intruded, and the business of earning a living and raising four sons took priority. With the advent of e-publishing and the inevitable emptying nest, dreams were resurrected, and the storyteller was reborn.

She stumbled into the world of men who love men in 2002 and continues to draw inspiration from their ongoing struggle to find equality and happiness in this oftentimes skewed and intolerant world.

Her novels have been called “gut wrenching, daring, and thought provoking.” She admits to being an angst queen and making her men work damn hard for their happy endings.

Mickie loves to travel and has lived in the Philippines, Spain, and the Middle East but currently resides in a suburb outside Chicago.

CONTEST WILL END ON 12th July, 2013 @ 11:59 PM Central Time!!

So, hurry!!

The Blog of Sid Love takes this opportunity to heartily welcome the authors Arionrhod and McKay, who are here today to talk about how their fantastic collaboration works while writing a story and also about their upcoming novel “Blood Bathory Like The Night” which releases on the 3rd of July, 2013! This guest post is tagged with a giveaway contest as well, which gives you a chance to win a copy of this book.

:~:~:~:~:

First, we’d like to thank Sid for having us as guests and giving us an opportunity to promote our new novel, Blood Bathory: Like the Night. We both have a very soft spot for this novel and for the world it  inhabits, since it was the first original work we completed and served  as a bridge between our fandom and professional writing.

Let’s start off by explaining that the “we” isn’t used in the royal sense.  For those who aren’t familiar with our work, “Ari McKay” is the name we  decided on because we wanted to use our fandom names, Arionrhod and McKay, when we moved into original writing. We decided using a single  name was easier on everyone.

We’ve been writing together since August, 2004, and we like to joke that our  writing partnership has lasted longer than some celebrity marriages.  Although we moved in the same fandom circles, we hadn’t really  interacted much before we started writing together, but we’d read each other’s solo stories.

Once we did start writing together, we developed a smooth collaboration  process that still serves us well all these years later. Because we  don’t live near each other, we use Google Docs to write our drafts. The benefits of using a collaborative writing tool is that we can both access the documents at the same time and write  together in real time when we’re online together in the evenings, and we can access the draft and take our turn in the current scene when we  have time during the day. It saves drafts automatically, and the draft  can be downloaded as a Word document once we’re ready to start editing  and formatting in preparation to submit the story.

Recently, we’ve begun using Evernote to organize notes about our stories, clip webpages and photos we can  use for inspiration, write up character bios, and keep an on-going plot  bunny list (over 60 bunnies and counting!), among other things. We give  our novels their own notebook; the Recipe for Romance series has its own notebook, and our short stories all go in the same notebook. It’s been a very handy organizational tool, and the best thing is that we can both  access it from our computers, our smart phones, or our iPads.

Our writing process is pretty simple, and we’ve got it honed to an art form at this point. First we decide on the overall plot, which is determined based on whether we’re writing for a specific call for submissions or  we’ve been attacked by a giant, rabid plot bunny that’s sunk its teeth  into our ankles and refused to let go. Sometimes, it’s both!

Blood Bathory: Like the Night was a plot bunny that bit us several years ago when we were still in  fandom, although when we decided to turn it into a novel, the idea was,  by necessity, morphed from its original concept to make it workable as a stand-alone universe. We didn’t want to write just another  vampire/werewolf novel, so we did some major world building to explain  the origins of our supernatural races. Our vampires have a rather unique origin, while our shapeshifters are tied to the earth in a very  fundamental way. We don’t want to give away too much, but we believe we  have some very unique and surprising twists in our story that will set  it apart, and we hope will make it interesting for the readers.

This novel is the first in a trilogy, which will explain the entire history  of the supernatural war between life and death. It will show how good  people can be drawn into evil, and how forgiveness can be found even by  those thought beyond redemption. The protagonists must deal with loss,  betrayal, temptation, fear, and horrors beyond anything they’ve  imagined, while still clinging to the belief that love can conquer all.  It’s a journey we hope that everyone will want to join our characters in making, and if you enjoy yourselves along the way, then we’ll feel as  though our job has been well done.

Blood Bathory: Like the Night will be released by Torquere Press on July 3, 2013.

Blurb:

Evan St. John, a young fashion photographer running from the pain caused by  the death of his younger sister, is thrilled when he is offered a job  with House of Nadasdy, a leading fashion house in Paris. What he doesn’t know is that Elizabeth Nadasdy, the elegant and powerful owner, is a  centuries-old vampire with a penchant for collecting beautiful people.  To Evan’s horror, he is turned into one of her “children”.

Unable to bear what he has become, Evan flees to New York and to his best  friend, police officer Will Trask. For years, he has nursed an  unrequited love for Will, but he also knows Will is the one person who  might be able to help him. As Evan and Will try to deal with Evan’s  condition, they are drawn into the world of the theriomorphs:  shape-shifters who are guardians of life and the sworn enemies of  vampires. Caught in a ancient war between two powerful supernatural  forces, Evan and Will find they must choose sides — because if they are to have any chance of a future together, they must destroy Elizabeth  Nadasdy before she destroys them.

Excerpt:

“I need help,” Evan said in a matter-of-fact way that belied the conversational bombshell.

“Help?” Surprised yet again, Will sank down on the opposite end of the sofa,  giving his friend another searching look. If he hadn’t known Evan as  well as he did, he might have thought it was a joke, but this didn’t  feel like a prank — especially not if Evan had come all the way from  Paris after three years just to ask for his help! If Evan was in  trouble, though, he’d come to the right person. “Do you need a place to  stay? Or do we need to go to the police?”

“No!” Evan shook his head vehemently. “We can’t involve the police. It  wouldn’t do any good even if they believed me.” With a sigh, he raked  one hand through his unkempt hair, his expression troubled. “I need a  safe place to stay.” He glanced up, his pale eyes fixing Will with a  searching look. “You have to promise you won’t open the door to anyone  you don’t know.”

Will blinked. “You’re safe here. Well, as safe as I am, I suppose.” The fact that Evan didn’t want to go to the police didn’t surprise him; he’d  learned there were many people who didn’t trust the authorities to help  them with their problems, even when their lives were at stake. Or  perhaps especially when their lives were at stake. “Fine, no police. And I’m the paranoid  type, you know that. I’m not going to invite someone I don’t know into  my home. But it might help to know if there’s anyone particular I should watch out for.”

“I can’t tell you that.” Evan raised one hand as if to ward off the  protest Will was about to make. “Not because I don’t trust you or  because I don’t want to, but because I can’t. I don’t know who she’ll send. She won’t come herself, that’s for sure. Not unless it’s absolutely necessary.”

“She? She who?” Will could well imagine his friend could have had his pick of the young women he photographed if he leaned that way — which he  didn’t. “Have you picked up a stalker? Just how much danger are we  talking about? I’d like to know how paranoid I need to be, and the more I know, the more I can help you fix this.”

“It’s a matter of life and death,” Evan replied, then he laughed, although  the sound was more manic than mirthful, and his eyes looked haunted.  “Although we’ve already had the death part, in a way. It’s life I’m  looking for now.” Evan wrapped his arms around himself and trained his  gaze on the floor. “It’s not a stalker. She wanted me, and she got me  already, so there’s no need for that kind of chase.” He looked at Will  again, his expression pleading. “I want to tell you everything, but I  don’t know if you’ll believe me.”

Will had always been protective of those he cared about, and Evan was no  exception, especially since Evan’s attractive face, slender build and  “out and proud” attitude had occasionally made him a target on campus.  It had been that way since their freshman year, and it was no different  now. It was ridiculous, perhaps, and no doubt part of that White Knight  thing Evan had always teased him about, but Will couldn’t help it; it  was just the way he was.

“You might as well ‘fess up now, because I’m going to get the story out of  you one way or another. I’m not going to let anyone hurt you if I can do anything about it. We stick together, right?” Will’s tone grew serious. “I mean it, Evan. You know you can count on me. You’re my best friend.” It was still true, even though they hadn’t been face-to- face in years. No one had ever taken Evan’s place in his life; no one ever could.

“Even if I tell you I’ve been working for a vampire?” Evan asked softly. “I  don’t mean that figuratively, either. I mean literally. She’s a monster. She’s killed her own models. She turns people into monsters like her.”

For a long moment, Will couldn’t do anything but stare at his friend,  wondering if this was a joke and he was somehow missing the punch line.  Evan’s blue eyes were haunted but guileless; the man was a lousy liar,  at least when it came to Will, and there was too much pain in Evan’s  gaze for it to be some elaborate trick. Whatever was really going on,  Evan, at least, believed what he was saying, and that was the most  horrifying part of it. Whatever had happened to Evan in the last few  months had damaged him in a way that Will was afraid he wasn’t going to  be able to fix.

It was painful to face the fact that his best friend had apparently  suffered some sort of mental breakdown, and Will cursed himself for not  having tried harder to get in contact when Evan’s communications had  grown infrequent. Obviously Evan had been going through something  terrible, and Will knew that he had to do whatever he could to get Evan  the help he needed. Which meant making sure that Evan remained here for  now, until Will could figure out how to get him to a doctor.

“Let me make sure I understand what you’re saying,” he replied, keeping his  voice quiet and reassuring. “Elizabeth Nadasdy, the famous fashion  designer, is a vampire who kills people. That makes sense, I suppose. Or at least it explains why the models all look as though they weigh five  pounds.” His attempt at humor sounded hollow, but it was the best he  could do at the moment. “And she’s after you?”

Evan leaned back away from Will. “You don’t believe me. You think I’m crazy.”

Will hated to see that look on Evan’s face, the question of sanity aside.  “Evan, it’s not that I don’t want to believe you, all right? But you  know how it sounds, don’t you?” He knew his tone was pleading. “Vampires don’t exist. I can tell you believe it, though, and that makes it hard, because I know you’d never lie to me. But how can I believe it? How can you believe it?” He reached out and touched Evan’s arm in mute appeal. “How?”

Evan met Will’s gaze, his expression steady and calm, no trace of madness  lurking in his gaze. “I don’t just believe it. I know it. I know it  because I’m one too.”

EXCERPT

Faro stood at the entrance with a phone to his ear, dressed in a dark tailored suit with a shirt almost matching his hair color, one hand in his pocket.

Jesus. Kane stared at him as their gazes met and locked. The left corner of Faro’s mouth tipped up and he ended the call, shoving the phone into his pocket as he strode across the floor and up to Kane.

Trouble. He’d been trained to recognize and stop it, so Kane knew in his gut trouble headed his way. Problem was, he wasn’t sure if he should duck for cover or embrace it with open arms.

“Marshal.”

The women’s whispers grew louder and Kane shot them a death glare. They moved away, but not before the taller of the two, a skinny dark-haired thirty-something, flashed him a knowing wink.

Damn it. “Let’s get out of here,” he murmured under his breath.

“Not just yet.” Faro sidled up next to him and turned his gaze to the painting on the wall. “Why this place?” His voice was low, intimate in the quiet of the museum.

Kane didn’t like it, the way Faro’s tone made him want to shift closer, lean into him to catch his words.

“This is neutral territory,” he answered.

Faro grunted. “Familiar.”

He acknowledged the truth with a nod Faro couldn’t see. “That too.”

They stood in silence, Faro’s gaze intently taking in Sunset and Kane doing his damndest not to be aware of the man next to him. He was stunning, his features delicate to the point of feminine, his stature and slender build belying a strength Kane had long recognized in his stance, in his eyes, in his voice.

“Why am I here again?”

“Answers.” Kane cleared his throat and looked around. “I’ve asked before and I’m asking again, who are you and what do you want?”

A throaty laugh drifted to his ears as Faro shifted closer, his warmth right there for the basking in. “You know who I am.”

“I don’t.” Frustration sharpened Kane’s words. “My brother-in-law says I can trust you. He says he does.”

He caught Faro’s nod in his periphery.

“He and I go way back. I watched him change for your brother.”

A muscle ticked in Kane’s temple. “You know my brother?”

Faro glanced at him, the brief interaction enough to make Kane want to be someplace else, anywhere but where he was.

“Gabe and I, we have our moments. I had dinner with him and Rafe a few weeks ago.” Syren grinned with his gaze straight ahead. “Gabe likes to pretend he doesn’t like me, but I know he does.”

“What do you want?” Faro didn’t answer for a long while and Kane gave in to the need to move. He took a step back. Then another. He exited the gallery and made a left in the corridor. The woman behind the desk met his gaze then flashed a forced smile to the two women from earlier. He needed to leave, get away. Balling his hands into fists, Kane spun away and strode to the door leading to the front courtyard.

He didn’t hear Faro approach but he blinked and the other man was there, in stride with him as he ran down the museum steps. He didn’t know why and he didn’t care, but his head, his instincts were yelling at him to get far, far away from Faro.

A hand closed over his as he grasped his car door. Kane froze and stared down at the only place they were joined, his skin tanned and Faro’s pale, unblemished. Soft, but hot, branding him right there, in broad daylight.

“You asked me a question.” Faro spoke from his right side and Kane swung his attention to the left, he didn’t want to look into the smaller man’s eyes.

“Forget it,” he rasped. “Forget this, it was a bad idea.” He tugged his hand but Faro held firm. Kane dropped his gaze again, fascination getting the better of him. He was bigger, stronger, if he chose to he could free himself, but that touch was like a warm blanket he wasn’t even aware he needed until he found himself all wrapped up in it.

“I don’t want to forget it, I want to answer.” Faro squeezed him where he held on to Kane then moved away, giving him space to move, to run.

Escape.

But his limbs had long given up on working right. Kane shifted slowly, leaning his weight on his car as he looked to his right. Faro stood there, watching him with those fucked-up eyes. Kane opened his mouth to yell at him, tell him not to look at him like that. In that way that made him…feel.

In the middle of his chest something gripped him tight, held him immobile, cutting off his words. Jesus. Kane shook his head to clear the fog. “Who are you?” Because surely there had to be another explanation for this, another answer.

“You know who I am.” A curtain fell over Faro’s eyes and his mouth twisted. “Can’t escape that.” He patted his left side, muttering under his breath in a foreign language.

“Then why are you here?” Kane asked. What was he missing? “Why are you here with me?”

A tragic smile crossed Faro’s face. “Tempting fate. Being selfish.” He fished a cigarette from his pocket and held it between the thumb and forefinger of his right hand. “Been trying to quit.” The expensive suit moved with him when he shrugged, a fluid motion.

“It’s bad for you,” Kane croaked.

Faro’s gaze snapped to his. “A lot of things are bad for you.” He dragged the cigarette under his nose and inhaled deeply. “Deadlier than this.”

A warning Kane took to heart. He jerked open his car door and slid into the passenger seat then the driver’s. His plan for a clean break and getaway went straight down the crapper when Faro dived after him. Kane gripped the steering wheel and stared ahead, ignoring the man now filling up the inside of his car with his presence, his heat and his musk.

“I will leave you alone if that’s your wish,” Faro said slowly, clearly. “But first we’re gonna have us a nice chitchat.”

Kane gritted his teeth and counted to ten in his head “Get out.”

“I can’t attest to who I was in any past life, if such a thing even exists,” Faro whispered. He lifted his hand, hovering it above Kane’s before letting it fall back in his lap. “Most days I’m not even sure who I am in the present, but I know I’ve never been the kind of person to think I need someone else to make my life complete. Until I saw you. Now all I think is that I need this man. All I know is I need you.”

TITLE: Black Dog Blues (Book #1)
SERIES: Kai Gracen series
AUTHOR: Rhys Ford
PUBLISHER: Coffee Squirrel Press
BLURB: Ever since he’d been part of the pot in a high-stakes poker game, elfin outcast Kai Gracen figured he’d used up any good karma he had when Dempsey, a human Stalker, won the hand and took him in. Following the violent merge of Earth and Underhill, the human and elfin races were left with a messy, monster-ridden world and Stalkers were often the only cavalry willing to ride to someone’s rescue when something shadowy and dark moved into the neighbourhood.

There certainly were no shortage of monsters or people stupidly willing to become lunch for one.

It was a hard life but one Kai liked. And he was good at it. Killing monsters was easy. Especially since he was one himself.

After an accident retired Dempsey out, Kai set up permanent shop in San Diego, contracting out to the local SoCalGov depot. It was a decent life, filled with bounty, a few friends and most importantly, no other elfin around to remind him he wasn’t really human.

That was until a sidhe lord named Ryder arrives in San Diego and Kai is conscripted to do a job for Ryder’s fledgling Dawn Court. It was supposed to a simple run; head up the coast during dragon-mating season to retrieve a pregnant human woman seeking sanctuary with the new Court then back to San Diego. Easy, quick and best of all, profitable. But Ryder’s “simple” run leads to massive trouble and Kai ends up being caught in the middle of a deadly bloodline feud he has no hope of escaping.

No one ever got rich by being a Stalker. But then hardly any of them got old either. The way things were looking, it didn’t look like Kai was going to be the exception.

REVIEW:

Rhys Ford has finally joined the worlds of Urban Fantasy!  About damn time if you ask me!

In Black Dog Blues we are introduced to Kai Gracen, an elfin Stalker living amongst the humans in San Diego years following the Merge, where the human and elfin worlds had come together resulting in violent wars between the races (human, sidhe and unsidhe) and freaky, mutated creatures.  Kai hates all things elfin and attempts to live his life more human than…a human, hunting black dogs for bounty and basically anything else the SoCalGov demands that he do.  After suffering from years of abuse when he was younger, Kai tries to keep all personal relationships at a distance and is quick to say that he limits all his sexual to encounters to nameless humans; male or female.  And then, in walks Ryder who fucks it all up.

Ryder is a sidhe lord who has recently moved to San Diego to set up his own Dawn Court right in the middle of the humans.  Clearly he has an agenda.  Anyway, he has contracted Kai through the Post requiring him to make a dangerous run to Los Angeles to transport a pregnant human safely back to San Diego.  Ah, and then everything gets crazy!

Here are a few things you have to look forward to when you read this book:

Outstanding world building:  I absolutely love this world that Rhys as created.  It’s unique and imaginative and vivid.  I must advise you to give this 100% of your focus, or it may be a bit too easy to get lost in some of the complexity.  It isn’t a simple, light read.

Great, complex characters that are easy to love:  Kai is such a fascinating character with so many more secrets to tell.  I don’t see how anyone could not adore him.  Yeah, he’s fussy and prickly but that just makes me want to hug him and squeeze him.  He has so many barriers that need to be torn down, and I believe Ryder will be the elfin to do it.  And Ryder, he just gives off an aura that makes me want to trust him even though I know he still hasn’t been fully honest about everything.  Luckily, Kai sees right through Ryder’s hidden agenda but still knows that deep down his motives are mostly good.  Although, those motives are all bad news for Kai!  Then, lets not forget some of the great secondary characters:

  • Newt – Kai’s devil of a cat who is loyal to no one, although I believe he secretly loves Kai
  • Alexa – Ryder’s cousin who wants to have “purple-eyed babies” with Kai
  • Oketsu the Mustang – hey, he had personality…poor guy
  • Dalia – Kai’s purple haired BFF who risks her job everyday being there for Kai

Some good sexual tension:  This isn’t exactly your typical romance…because obviously it is urban fantasy.  It is plot and character driven, but the slow-burn undertones promise to give us an epic romance further into the series.  Ryder accepts Kai for who and what he is…and I don’t believe for even a second that he would ever share.

“I don’t want to tame you, Kai. I just want you.”

Plus, there is some good, sexy banter shared between the two of them.  It is very clear that these guys have some combustible chemistry that hasn’t even been experienced yet.

Lots of danger and action:  Anyone who has read anything written by Rhys, knows that she likes to jump right into the story with a crazy, exciting scene. Well, this is no different, and it just keeps going from there.  I know there were several times where I said to myself, “What.The.Fuck?!”  Plus, there many more sitting-on-the edge-of-a-cliff moments.

In the end, I just wanted more! I want to know more about what Kai is. I want to know more about what Kai can do. And most of I all, I want to know how Kai is going to handle Ryder…because we all know Kai is not going to easily go along with anything.

Highly recommended to all those Urban Fantasy lovers out there who are in the mood for a crazy adventure filled with black dog blood and a side of baby goo.

I end this with a challenge.  A challenge to all of you to plead and beg Rhys Ford until she gives us a sequel!

TITLE: Dead Man and the Restless Spirits (Book #1)
SERIES: Dead Man series
AUTHOR: Lou Harper
BLURB: Dying sucks hairy monkey balls, even when you’re not the stiff.

Denton Mills has a secret: he can see dead people. Or rather, how they died. It’s quite a drag in a city like Chicago, teeming with the echoes of the no-longer living. Rather than whine about it, Denton has learned to live with his troublesome talent. His adaptability comes in handy when he meets his enigmatic new neighbor.

Bran Maurell catches Denton’s eye right away, but unfortunately Mr. Tall, Dark, and Mysterious is as standoffish as he is alluring. However, after an unexpected introduction from Bran’s cat brings the two men together, Denton discovers they have a mutual interest in the spirit world. Herbalist by day, Bran moonlights as a witch, performing house cleansings for a fee.

From Bran, Denton learns that his knack for interacting with the dead qualifies him as a necromancer. It makes good business sense for them to team up and rid Chicago of its pesky spirits one grateful client at a time. Amongst ghostly adventures the attraction between the men is impossible to ignore. They seem like perfect partners—unless Bran’s not-so-little secret comes between them.

Warning: men loving men, ghosts with attitudes, and a portly feline with hidden talents.

Note: Denton also plays a small but important role in Spirit Sanguine.

REVIEW:

Lou Harper is a new-to-me author and I really really enjoy her style.  Her writing is funny and quirky and sarcastic and those all appeal to me.

The story is about Denton, who as a necromancer, is able to see dead people as well as feel & summon spirits. He doesn’t know much about his gifts or how he can utilize them until he meets his new neighbor, Bran. Bran is mysterious and a man of few words and Denton is drawn to him immediately…despite it being obvious, the guy has secrets.

Denton in his pierced, care-free, take-no-sh*t way is charming and funny. Bran in his brooding, stoic, powerful way is sexy and enigmatic. When Denton is finally able to break down the walls with Bran (and get to his secrets!), the pairing is likable and the partnership between them is sweet. Bran teaches Denton how to utilize his gifts and Denton teaches Bran how to lighten up!  Being a sucker for a strong man reduced to a sap by love, I really enjoyed this coupling.

The story as a whole is interesting. It reads more like an episodic serial than a novel and that actually felt like I was getting to know these MC’s over a span of time and shared experiences. That also, however, made the story feel choppy and I found myself putting my kindle down often and not being compelled to power through in one sitting. And though the story, I could tell, wanted to break through and be fresh and original, it harkened me back to a similar feel & plot in Jordan Castillo Price’s “PsyCop” series…which had the benefit of being my “first” and thus, of course, I compare all others to it. Dead Man & the Restless Spirits, in my mind, places a distant second.

Though I really do like Denton and Bran, I didn’t really get to know them well enough to LOVE them.  I think I just need more.  It’s a solid book 1.  I am looking forward to the series continuing and I do recommend this to anyone who enjoys this paranormal-in-a-contemporary-setting genre.

STORY: You have never mattered/I have always mattered
BOOK: Lost and Found
AUTHORS: Michele Montgomery/D. H. Starr
EDITOR: Kris Jacen
PUBLISHER: Featherweight Press
BLURB: Some statistics say that 40% of all homeless teens are GLBT. They’re on the streets after their families have thrown them away, told them that they don’t matter, that they’re not normal. Well, guess what? Those families are wrong. This collection of stories by ten talented authors spans the spectrum (historical, paranormal, transgender, cutter, gay) to show that – it’s okay, there are people out there that care, and these teens are perfect just the way they are.

REVIEW:

You Have Never Mattered and I Have Always Mattered are the two stories that are based on the life of a boy who has suffered throughout his childhood. Randall, aged sixteen, has only his mother to call as his family. However, all his life, she has treated Randy like shit. She nags about how he has been nothing but a burden to her since his birth, that she could have been well off by herself and yet lives on all of Randy’s income that he earns working all day long on a farm. Reading about the things she does – not only to Randy but the others to whom she lies or cheats and oh yes, being the master mind of an online fraud – you can’t help hating her.

It amazed me thinking how the sweet, innocent Randy was born to someone like her. And more astonishing was the fact that the boy hadn’t been severely broken and damaged by then.

Jay … he is the boy in Randy’s life who keeps him steady through thick and thin. He is the reason, Randy confesses in the story, that he wouldn’t have survived so long if it hadn’t been for Jay. It is their dream of moving out and being together forever that keeps Randy going. But sadly, not all dreams come true … Fate plays such a cruel game that changes Randy’s life. Also, when his mother somehow finds out about his relationship with Jay, she throws him out expressing her disgust for his being gay.

After reading You Have Never Mattered I had personally started to feel extreme emotions towards the characters – extreme empathy for Randy, for whom I wanted a happy ending so badly; extreme anger towards Randy’s mother – I wanted her to rot in hell and never come back and extreme respect for the two secondary characters – Mr. and Mrs. Carter (Jay’s grandparents – who selflessly take Randy under their wing and protect him like their own. YHNM is a heart-wrenching tale, which though has a hopeful ending, it also made me wonder if Randy would ever get the true happiness that he deserves. So, it was nothing but bliss I felt when we get a peek into Randy’s future life in I Have Always Mattered. It made me feel like a proud papa who suddenly realizes his son has grown up so much that he can take better care of himself. His transition over the years is narrated in this story and we see his happily ever after with the man he was always destined to be with!

D. C. JURIS

Hi folks ::waves:: I’m DC Juris – I’m an out and proud bisexual transgender man, and a writer of GLBTQ romance.

I grew up in the South, in a Southern Baptist family. It wasn’t uncommon to hear jokes about African Americans, Jewish people, and yes, gay people, around the lunch table at my grandmother’s house on Sundays. My father was a mentally, physically, and sexually abusive alcoholic with extreme rage issues. My mother was a co-dependent dry drunk. They were both abused in their childhoods – they were, quite literally, a perfect storm of dysfunction.

Imagine my fear when I discovered, in Kindergarten, that I liked both boys and girls.

Imagine my horror when I realized that there was a name for what I was: transgender.

But let’s back up a little.

As far back as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to be male. I can recall being in Second Grade and looking at the older boys and wondering when I was going to look like them. For most of my young life, I ended up wearing boys’ clothing. It wasn’t on purpose, but because my father drank most of the money he made, so they relied on hand-me-downs, and most of those were from boys. I was perfectly happy to don some denim overalls and a t-shirt, with sneakers on my feet. I played in the dirt, I trudged through ditches in search of turtles and fish. I did all the things little boys did.

That is, until puberty hit. In about three months, at the age of nine, I went from a flat-chested kid whom everyone assumed was a boy, to a C-cup, unmistakably feminine girl. Suddenly my overalls and t-shirts were replaced with dresses, skirts and pantyhose. My beloved, comfortable sneakers were replaced with heels. (Yes, at nine I was wearing heels.) Makeup and hair styling came close after, and I became a thing I hated. A thing I couldn’t even recognize when I looked in the mirror. I longed to be myself. I longed to be male.

I knew better than to open my mouth about how I felt. I knew how my father felt about gay people, and, even though I didn’t realize I was transgender, I understood I was different enough to be considered wrong. I was too different.

One day after school while I was in Junior High, my father caught me hugging a friend of mine. She was actually my secret girlfriend. We thought we were pretty good at hiding it, but looking back, I’m sure we weren’t. My father must’ve told my mother, because she confronted me later. I boldly told her I was a lesbian. I thought I could trust her. After all, she was the one who didn’t laugh at the nasty jokes. She was the one who always tried to steer the conversation away from that kind of talk.

My mother told me I was confused, that there was no way I could understand who I was attracted to. In a shining example of parent of the year, she informed me that anyone could turn me on if they knew what they were doing – even her (my mother). I was then forbidden to see my friend again. I was forced to give her back anything she’d given me – toys, books, trinkets – and I was to have no contact with her again.

From then on out, my parents life focused on making me look like a girl as much as possible, and on trying to convince me to be “normal.” Mind you, during all of this, my father started sexually abusing me. No matter what I did, though, I was never good enough. I didn’t laugh right. I burped too loud. I could never remember to sit with my legs crossed. And, God help me, I couldn’t cook to save my life.

Over the next few years, I fell into a dark depression. To deal with the mental and physical pain, I started cutting. In an attempt to get rid of my hated breasts, I became anorexic. By the time I graduated high school, I weighed eighty pounds, and had tried to kill myself once.

I bought my first computer for $300 from my aunt. It took about twenty minutes to boot up, and I couldn’t download anything on it because of how full it was, but it did run the Internet. That was where I discovered I wasn’t alone. In fact, there were lots of people like me – people who felt they’d been born in the wrong body.

On the Internet, in an AOL Chat Room, I met a man named Dan. He’d been born Dana, and after years of struggling, had finally embraced who and what he was. He taught me that I had options – that I didn’t have to be defined by what others thought I should be. He taught me that I could be me.

I lost touch with him after a while, like people do. It wasn’t anyone’s fault. But by the time I finally got around to looking him up, I learned he’d passed away a month before.

Dan never got to see me be the man I wanted to be. He never got to see me fall in love with someone who accepted me. He never got to see me flourish.

I live my life everyday trying to be a person he could’ve been proud of. Sometimes, I stumble. Sometimes I’m selfish and bitter, and sometimes I’m just an ass. LOL

But I never forget the lessons I learned from him. I never forget the scared, depressed kid I was.

If I could go back in time and see the kid I was, I’d just grab him and hug him. I’d tell him that he was good enough just the way he was. That he didn’t need to live up to anyone’s lofty expectations. That he didn’t need to starve himself or harm himself. I’d tell him not to give up. That the world was bigger than the tiny little hell he’d found himself stuck in. That life had more for him – amazing things and wonderful people who would understand him and accept him. I’d tell him not to give his tormentors the glory of his defeat – but instead, to rise up, to flourish, to thrive, to grow like a wild daisy, unbound by convention, and to show them all that this boy they said wasn’t good enough was better than all of them.

STORY: Thrown Away
BOOK:
Lost and Found
AUTHOR: D. C. Juris

REVIEW:

The Lost and Found story I’m reviewing today, Thrown Away, is a straight forward story about a boy who is thrown out of his parents’ house after he confesses he identifies as a girl. His family gives him the cold shoulder and he ends up in a nasty shelter. Until he gets rescued by loving, open minded people. But there’s a little twist…

Although Thrown Away is well-written, the events and how they unfold are nothing if not predictable. These are the situations the teens that the Lost-n-Found Youth in Atlanta provides for, have all found themselves in at some point. But that doesn’t mean it makes for a particularly interesting reading experience. Since these stories are all fictional, I must admit that I had expected the subject matter to be explored with more creativity. Yes, it is terrible that hate, ignorance and fear poison the lives of promising kids. It’s infuriating that parents turn against their own children if they fail to fit the mold of ‘normalcy’. You and I both know these things happen though. I personally don’t require tearjerkers to be reminded of the importance of the cause.

In fact, I think I would have preferred recollections of real kids to fiction. Yes, a bundle of interviews with t(w)eens, recalling their struggles in life and how those struggles defined them, could have packed a punch. Imagine this; their voices would have delivered such a powerful message!

I had hoped for this anthology to inspire, enlighten and inform me. Since I am reviewing Thrown Away, in which the MC is a girl in a boy’s body, how about some food for thought? When your MC has to deal with something that most readers probably have not encountered themselves and find intriguing, why not dive into what it actually entails to be locked up in the wrong body? What options does a boy have when he decides he wants to be a girl? When is the right time to let a girlfriend or boyfriend in on his little secret? There’s so much material to work with here, to turn into a story that would have kept me on the edge of my seat. Stories that could have made you or, in this case, comfortable-in-her-own-body me actually FEEL how intoxicating it is to pass as the opposite sex for the first time. And what a relief to finally be able to inject those hormones that will stop these terrifying processes in a body that feels alien.

So it’s about more than creating awareness for a glaring problem, it’s about creating understanding. About making people see that they are damn lucky to be who they are and that they should be supportive of those who weren’t that lucky, and have long, unpleasant roads ahead of them to obtain a body that feels right. To become that someone you and I were fortunate enough to be all along.

My rating for this book is first and foremost meant as praise for the heartwarming initiative to donate Lost and Found’s royalties to this wonderful charity. This alone should be reason enough to immediately order this book. If you end up enjoying these stories, well, that’s a big, fat bonus!

STORY: Sam I Am
BOOK: Lost and Found
AUTHORS: Jeff Erno
EDITOR: Kris Jacen
PUBLISHER: Featherweight Press
BLURB: Some statistics say that 40% of all homeless teens are GLBT. They’re on the streets after their families have thrown them away, told them that they don’t matter, that they’re not normal. Well, guess what? Those families are wrong. This collection of stories by ten talented authors spans the spectrum (historical, paranormal, transgender, cutter, gay) to show that – it’s okay, there are people out there that care, and these teens are perfect just the way they are.

REVIEW:

When fifteen year old Sam confesses to his Mom that he’s gay, he didn’t expect to be taken from his family home by concerned Christians who propose to keep him in a secure facility where he will be ‘cured’.  When desperate pleading and tears don’t work, he flees and decides to take his chances on the streets.

This short story begins two years later. Sam has recently formed a close relationship with Cody who’s taken it upon himself to care for Sam. That is, until Cody himself becomes a victim of their wretched situation and Sam is left alone; panicked and distraught.

Enter Greg, a youth pastor, who proves to be the antithesis of what Sam believes Christians to be. Now Sam must trust the very church that stole his innocence, betrayed his faith and ruined his life. Will Sam ever be able to trust again? And will he ever find Cody?

This short story addresses the virtues of ‘good’ Church vs ‘bad’ Church. And like the other stories in this anthology it is a compelling, thought provoking topic.

The story in itself is quite spare. The writing is almost insufficient and the pace and time arc doesn’t quite allow the reader to fully engage with the characters. But still, the message is strongand one that resonates with the theme of this anthology. Fortunately with just a bit of love, kindness and acceptance Sam’s story leaves a person with hope and optimism for young GLBT kids.

STORY: The Preacher’s Son/Clay Rocks
BOOK: Lost and Found
AUTHORS: Caitlin Ricci/T. A. Webb

REVIEW:

The Preacher’s Son & Clay Rocks are corresponding stories about Clay, a young teen kicked out of his home by his religious parents after coming out as gay.  Clay leaves the only home and town he’s over known and heads to live with his sister.  Determined to live a life without shame, Clay quickly makes his mark in a new school with new friends.

The Preacher’s Son is Clay’s story.  It is emotional, as you can imagine, as Clay’s heart is broken by his parents’ actions.  Thankfully he has a supportive and loving sister in Sarah and he’s able to start over in a new town.  He joins the Rainbow Brigade and is accepted among a group of friends for who he is. Clay befriends Zeke, the local preacher’s son. The two share a connection and as their relationship deepens, Clay finds that he is both braver and stronger than he knew.  It is a sweet story about acceptance and young love and surprising allies.  It’s an important message and Clay is a really likable character.

Clay Rocks is Clay’s story from his sister Sarah’s POV.  Sarah has her own challenges as she, too, was basically been pushed out of her parents’ home for being in an interracial relationship (yeah…their parents are kind of awful).  As she supports Clay in his new life, she finds her life’s loose ends needing to be settled.  Finding inspiration from Clay, Sarah and her boyfriend Jess make tough choices to do what makes them both happy.  I found myself rooting for Sarah and thankful for her being there for Clay as well as finding her own HEA.

The premise of thes stories, time and again, breaks my heart. How parents can ever reject and turn their backs on their children is beyond any rational or emotional thought I can even imagine.  To throw your child out of your home without any way to take care of himself is criminal. And the fact that this story is REAL and TRUE and happening OFTEN makes me ANGRY.  Thanks to the authors of this anthology, to the publisher, to those who purchase it, and to Lost-N-Found Youth for all contributing in your own ways to take care of these effected youth.

This is a highly recommended read.
